Trainer’s Train (Happy 4th of July)

I had just finished my workout. I was inputting my last set into the BodySpace App, when I became aware of a group of women by the Hack Squat Machine.

My attention was drawn by the fact that not one of the women used the machine, but rather stood by it engaged in conversation. I watched in dismayed for a few moments more, knowing that my annoyance might have shown if I had needed the machine.

As I passed by one of the women queried if I needed the machine. I politely answered, no, but I would soon find out I couldn’t escape that easily.

“You’re are one of the trainers here,” she said.

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry if we disturbed you.”

“Uh.”

“We tend to talk loud.”

“No worries, I blocked out everything when I’m working out.”

“We’ve noticed,” she said. “Your focus is clearly on the person you are training.”

I nodded and was about to bid her good day, but she seemed intent on continuing with the conversation.

“We were wondering what trainer’s do on a holiday?”

“Excuse me?”

“We were planning our 4th of July festivities. One of the girls noticed you working out, remarked that you are one of the trainer’s here, and wondered what you would be doing on the holiday.”

“Curious?”

“Uh?”

“Something else must have happened.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Because something prompted you to approach me. I thought it might have been to procure my services as trainer, but your line of questioning does not prove that hypothesis to be correct.”

“We made a bet.”

“A wager?”

“Yes.”

“On?”

“Which one of us correctly guessed, what exactly would you be doing on the 4th.”

“Let me hear the choices, but tell me yours last.”

She turned and pointed at the other three women. “Mary, thinks you will be resting. Sue, said, you will spend it with family. Joan, thought you would be engaged in some outdoor activity, like hiking.

“I figured that how intense you are when you train others and yourself, you would be here in the gym.”

“Hopefully, the wager was more than a mere pittance. Transforming one’s physique is not easy. I wish you ladies a Happy 4th of July.

“Fitness never takes off for the Holidays, which is why my edict is simple . . . Trainer’s Train!”
